A woman was pregnant and told that due to some complication her placenta is not functioning properly. What will happen if the placenta fails to function during her gestation?
Text Solution
Verified by ExpertsC
The placenta is formed by the interdigitation of the chorionic villi and uterine tissue. It forms a structural and functional unit between the developing embryo (fetus) and maternal body for the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the embryo and also the removal of carbon dioxide and excretory/waste materials produced by the embryo. If the placenta fails to function during gestation, the embryo will not be able to survive.
